Feedback from our pitch

After we did our pitch we got feedback from the rest of the group. After looking through all the feedback the main point made from the majority of the group was that our idea wasn't original enough. We tried to think of how we could change this so that our video was not like all the others. At first we struggled to think of ideas that would make our idea more original, we are considering using green screens or looking at using a story to go along with the song to make it more original and personal.

Also the fact there are a couple of swear words in the song is an issue so using adobe we will dip the song when the swear words occur in order to suit all audiences.

more of the feedback is shown below:

Creativity Week

During creativity week we experimented in different ways in order to generate ideas for our pitch and our music video. Myself and Amy worked together to create a number of materials that helped to stimulate our imaginations.

Our song is in the rap/hip hop genre which helped to get us started, I made a poster, on this we wrote down as many words we could think of that related to our song and the genre. This helped to think of ideas for our music video such as using the streets or a strobe light. From this we could invision what ourvideo might look like.

We made a boom box out of card, we did this as something more creative, this was anohter material that helped to think of other objects associated with our genre.

I experimented on the whiteboard writing more words but using a graffitti style of writing, this can relate to our genre as we may use graffitti in our music video.

After all this we decided that the word relation poster helped us the most, from this we got our idea and started on our pitch using words to help develop points.

Creativity

Sir Ken Robinson
Ken Robinson is an author who spoke about creativity in schools.

He said 'if you're not prepared to be wrong, you'll never be able to come up with anything original.
Personally I agree with what ken robinson says about creativity and its importance, it is very important for people in order to develop ideas and expand their thinking. Also he says that if your not prepared to be wrong then you cannot be original, our music video has to be original therefore we will have to be creative. Intelligence can be shown and interpreted in many different ways, creativity can stimulate this. If kids are given the chance to be creative and imaginitive they can achieve so much more. From watching this video i have learnt that I have to experiment in different ways and be as creative as possible, people may not understand but it will be my own personal interpretation of ideas.
This is the video that we watched:

Andrew Goodwins Theory

Andrew Goodwins theory identifies 5 key aspects of music videos which are:
-Synaesthesia
-Narrative and Performance
-The star image
-Relation of visuals to a song
-Technical aspects of music video

Syaesthesia is taking something in with one sense, interpreting it then transferring it to another sense. (e.g. hearing and visualising)

Goodwin explains that music videos should ignore common narrative as it is important to their role of advertising, it has to work hand in hand to make it easier for the audience to watch without losing interest. It must engage the audience yet be ambiguous.

The star aspect is anopther vital aspect, there must be close ups of their stars, the video can portray people in different ways.

Technical aspects are also very important in music videos, lighting and colour can help to set mood, and create dramatic effect. Beats and cuts can set the pace to the song and mise-en-scene can help to create star image.

There are 3 different types of music video according to james goodwin, illustrative ones which means the visuals will match the lyrics. Amplifying ones which helps to add an extra layer of meaning to the song and disjunctive ones which ignores the whole meaning of the song.

50 cent- candy shop - The visuals make the video mostly amplifying.

Music Video Research: Eminem - When im gone

The video starts off in a hall, there are people around and you work out that it is an AA meeting for people with problems and addictions. From what you hear about Eminem in the news there is knowledge that he has had drug related issues so this video relates to that and his family. This song and video are very controversial and it is something very personal.

He asks to speak, and from there he starts his song. The speech/rap tells a story. The video is very illustrative according to Andrew Goodwins theory because it is like a story. The synaesthesia is being shown because what we are hearing we can also see.

Music Video Research: 50 Cent - Candy Shop

50 Cent is a male rap artist, and i am going to look at his video for Candy Shop.

The video starts with a panning, establishing shot, this shows the location. The location is an old house and is rather controversial for a rap/hip hop video, panning gives it an eerie feel. A sports car drives in and then we get a close up of a branded trainer. This brand tells us who the artist is and this is also a way of marketing the artist.

When the rapper walks into the house, their are various semi-naked girls walking around. The camera pans up their body, sexualising them. Then we get a shot back to the rapper, this video has reaction shots throughout. This can be related to the voyeurism theory because the females are there to flatter the male ego, to make it seem like he is irresistible.

The shots cut to the beat, this means it is fast paced and has a nice rythm to it. In the first 30 seconds there are over 12 shots, this is slightly unusual for a rap video because the pace is fast throughout but this video does tell a story and the first 30 seconds are mainly an introduction.

The video is basically a male fantasy, but this video does appeal to males and females because the males want the girls whereas the females want to be the girls. So this video appeals to both sexes.

The image of the star is shown through his clothes and reputation, he is a sterotypical gangster, he has fast cars, jeans, trainers, cap and has shows the male gaze towards women. The main woman in the video is supposed to be the madam but she is quite tame compared to some of the other girls, she is a tease to the rapper. 50 Cent is a well established rapper and is fairly famous, he has created an image for himself and you can see this through his video, this can be related to the auteur theory that the artist can stamp their own personality on the video which 50 cent does in this video.

This video has jump cuts creating fast pace, reaction shots to show the emotion and reaction to what the artist is seeing,  and slow motion  shots to sexualise the women and to slow down the shot.

This video has all 3 elements of Andrew Goodwins theory, the video is illustrative in some ways, when the rapper is singing about the 'love doctor' it gives you the image of the sexy nurse, this is illustrative. The video is also disjunctive because at the end of the video it shows that it was all just in the rappers imagination. Overall i would say this video is mostly amplifying because of all the visuals. Without the visuals the song would not be as effective.

Music Video Research: Beyonce and Jay Z: Crazy In Love

Beyonce and Jay Z got together to create a collaboration, the song is called Crazy In Love and fits in the genre of rap and pop.

The video starts off with an establishing shot, this shows the audience where it is all set. Its going down a street, this is typical for a rap/pop song. It gives it a 'street' feel, the video feels very urban.
The shot changes quite quickly to a close up of the rapper and his cap, this is a introduction to the artists, the artist starts his rap, it is fast paced and the shots switch back and fourth from close ups to establishing shots.

The camera then zooms into the female artist, in all the establishing shots the camera is moving forward, it is like a journey. Beyonce conveys attitude in this video by the way she walks and the way she acts. This is a big difference to the usual Beyonce, Beyonce' music and her videos are usually quite soft and tame. This video is of a totally different genre so she has to act in a certain way to get the mood of the song across to the audience. This can be related to Richard Dryers star theory, because of Beyonces' image. The perception of the video depends on the perception of the star. As Beyonce has a very large fan base it is more likely that people will like her music videos compared to a star that is not as liked.

When Beyonce is walking down the street she flicks her hair, when she does this the camera goes into slow motion, this gives it a sexy feel. Throughout this video Beyonce is being sexualised. The choreography for her dance and the way the camera pans up her body. This means the song will appeal to males as well as females.  There is also a shot of her bottom which is also very sexuality. The highly sexualised video can be related to the voyeurism theory as the female is being displayed as something to admire and desire.

When Beyonce is dancing on her own the camera is constantly moving to give different shots of her body, this gives the dance a fast pace and makes it seem rather erratic. This makes the audience concentrate more on the movements and the way the camera shows her body.

The shot when she is in the street with some of her friends gives a different view of the singer, in this shot she seems like a strong female. The genre is hip hop too so the clothing connotes that with the cap and the clothes that she is wearing. The dance that she does in this shot could also be classed as 'ghetto' which is another stereotypical thing to have in a rap song.

The next rap in the song is done in a different environment. It is a long shot meaning we can see the two artists and their surroundings, when he walks in he blows up the car, this does not necessarily link to the song but violence is used in some rap music videos. The long shot of Beyonce and Jay Z elevates Beyonce' seuxalised dance moves, she dances round the rapper and her outfit is also quite sexy.

Beyonce kicks the water hydrant and all the water starts spraying out. She dances under the water and the camera pans up her body. Throughout the song Beyonce is being sexualised, this attracts a bigger audience and fits in with a stereotypical hip hop song.

The last part of the song is the choreographed dance featuring beyonce and her backing dancers, this is slightly different as Beyonce is not so sexualised, although the dancing is still made sexy by the way the camera zooms in and out on her.

The video ends on a close up of Beyonce' face. in the first 30 seconds of the song there is over 30 shots, this means the video is fast paced. According to James Goodwins theory i would say that this music video is disjunctive because the video is not really related to what they are singing about.

Music Video Research: Cher Lloyd :Swagger Jagger

Cher Lloyd is a female rap and pop artist, I am going to look at her music video for Swagger Jagger.

The video starts off with close ups, this creates a mysterious feel, the audience see her finger pressing play on her mp3, then the music starts.

The mise-en-scene is very important in the first few seconds, there are close ups of her trainers which are designer, then her grey joggers, the leather jacket with the name of the song printed on and finally a boom box. This creates an image for the singer and helps to establish the genre.

This video uses a lot of graphic work, the graphics go along with the beat of the song and give it a funky, colourful look. Throughout the video the graphics pop up. Also there are words and images that pop up when she is singing, this makes the music video literal this also relates to synaesthesia because the audio matches the visuals. Overall I would say that the video is amplifying because it is very over the top. This realtes to Andrew Goodwins theory about aspects of music videos.

Cher Lloyd has attitude in this video and this matches to what we hear in the press about her diva attitude, there are many shots when she looks directly into the camera this connotes confidence. The video has a hip hop feel to it which is the genre that Cher Lloyd fits into. As this is her first video she had to make a statement and make the video stand out so that the audience remember her. This relates to the auteur theory that the director has to get the artist personality across so they can make their stamp, this is done in Cher Lloyds music video because we can see her personality and her attitude.

There is some choreographed dance in this music video which is very common for a hip hop video, there is also some street dance.  The editing is quite fast and the pace increases throughout the video as the tune gets faster.

Branding is used in this video, throughout we see close ups of branded trainers and other street wear, as well as Cher Lloyds personalised clothing. This is similar to the 50 cent candy shop video where he wore his 'G-Unit' clothing. This is marketing the singer and the image.

In this video we have a mix of dance shots and then we see a different image of Cher Lloyd, in these shots there is use of an artificial background and colourful lighting. This is showing the audience a different side to the singer.

The video is made up of mainly mid shots and long shots, the long shots are used to make the singer look powerful, she is a young girl competing with big artists and in her genre she is competing with a lot of male artists. The long shots make her look powerful and strong which is the personality of the singer.

At the end of the video it goes back to the beginning as if it is about to start all over again, this is disjunctive.
